Amazon.com The line between illusion and reality is intentionally blurred in the world of magic, but when a mysterious half-lion, half-eagle beast called a griffin threatens Velma's little sister Madelyn and her fellow students at Whirlen Merlin Magic Academy, the Mystery Inc. gang sets off to solve the puzzle. The castle-turned-school is teeming with odd characters, including two magician brothers with opposing personalities, an attractive magic assistant, a gruff groundskeeper, an older woman caretaker that came with the property, and a crafty ice-cream tycoon with an eye on purchasing the old castle. While the castle may be old, the technology used in the school features state-of-the-art projection equipment, fog machines, and other modern magical devices. Even Fred and the gang have joined the 21st century and are using a GPS device with plenty of attitude to help them find the castle. In the end, it's not a high-tech gadget, but some good old-fashioned sleuthing that leads the gang to solve the mystery of the griffin. The animation is fresh and clear in this new production, and while it initially seems odd to hear Mathew Lillard (from the live-action Scooby-Doo films) voicing Shaggy rather than Casey Kasem, viewers will quickly adjust. Frank Welker, Mindy Cohn, and Grey Delisle all return in their respective voice roles. Overall, the main characters seem less typecast than in previous films, but there are still plenty of references to Velma's propensity to overthink things and Daphne's innate clumsiness, and Fred is teasingly referred to as "scarf boy" more than once. The bonus "Scooby-Doo and Puppets Too" features Michael Moodoo instructing kids in the art of puppet making. His lessons on making rod puppets, bag puppets, and sock puppets are easy to follow, but they feature a strange mix of deliberately slow speech and grownup word choices. My least favorite of the animated features May 22, 2010 jmattern2980 The only thing they got right on this one was the shadowing (and even that felt a bit overdone at times). The story wasn't great, some of the characters looked like recycled composites, the GPS thing was too big of a deal for a while and it was far more annoying than funny, they put them back in their original outfits but otherwise tried to keep a more modern feel (didn't mesh well), I love Lillard and all but the voice acting just wasn't great in this, the villain was the most predictable I've seen yet.... I could go on.
I'm a huge Scooby fan. And despite all the parents freaking out about the "real monster" ones, frankly I think they've been some of the best. They were a new style adapted to a changing audience. I wouldn't even mind the "man in a mask" approach if they could write a decent enough story. But I don't know. This one was just all-around awful.
We love Scooby Doo May 20, 2010 B. Rastrelli A fun movie- typical Scooby Doo with some modern tech thrown into the mix. My 5 year old loved it!
Good for a family movie night or a rainy summer afternoon. A few plot twist & turns and icky ice cream flavors add a enought to entertain grown ups too.
Where in the world is Shaggy? Mr Kasem-come back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! May 5, 2010 JLL (IN United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We own every thing related to this show and are huge fans. This movie goes out of its way to let you know it will be a little different compared to other Scooby-Doo movies. The beginning credits are cute with stylized versions of the gang. It starts with them wrapping up a case at a chemical factory when Velma is called by her mom who is worried about her little sister. They head off to a Magician School where she is studying. The mystery involves a griffin. While the story is good the voice of Shaggy as Mat Lillard instead of Casey Kasem is distracting. My three kids kept saying, "That is not Shaggy." "Where is Shaggy." I too, found it distracting to not have the now familiar and comfortable voice of Mr Kasem there. If he was there it would have been a five. I don't understand the choice not to include him. Too bad, really.
doting grandma May 3, 2010 Bonnie R. Lund It's for a birthday gift. I haven't seen it but I know it's much wanted and He is a Scooby Doo fan and has been for a long time. I know He will love it. So far all the DVD's I have purchased for my grandchildren have been a huge success and as always with super fast delivery and the in the best condition.
A hit with my daughter. April 27, 2010 luv2cruise
My 5 year old daughter has owned this for 3 weeks and has asked to watch it over and over. She often calls me in to see the "funny parts". She has other scooby movies but this by far is her favorite!
