Product Description Because of his skill at the video game Starfighter, Alex is recruited by the alien Centauri to fight outer space wars and save the universe.
Amazon.com At the time of its original release in 1984, this modestly budgeted sci-fi excursion had the distinction of offering some of the first examples of purely computer-generated animation, an apt (and frugal) special-effects solution for a movie with a plot line rooted in computer games. Both the computer-generated visuals and the arcade game now look quaint, but writer-director Nick Castle's affable, good- hearted adventure holds up nicely, thanks to a clever premise--the title game is actually a test for prospective starship pilots, planted by embattled aliens under siege from an evil invader. When a restless teenager (Lance Guest) racks up an impressive score, he finds himself spirited away to the besieged planet and thrust into the midst of an intergalactic war. Apart from Castle's skill at contrasting his extraterrestrial settings with the mundane details of his hero's earthbound life, the movie gets lift-off from two thorough pros, Robert Preston, who makes the alien recruiter, Centauri, a planet-hopping cousin to The Music Man's Harold Hill, and Dan O'Herlihy, the alien copilot, who suggests a scaly Walter Brennan. Older fans will snicker, but kids and young teens will find this rite of passage absorbing, while their folks will savor Preston's brash charm. --Sam Sutherland

"The Last Starfighter," The Big Screen Blockbuster is Back! September 9, 2010 Christopher Martens (Crestline, CA United States) This is definitely a movie timepiece. Released in 1984, it represented the cutting edge of technology to produce the longest computer generated animation to appear in a feature length movie. It's not the new "Star Trek" Movie, but the story is classic and entertaining to all ages.
I read another review this morning, before UPS arrived, complaining about the DVD Version being the 4:3 version (Old TV Standard) cropped to look like the wide-screen version. This new Blu-Ray, 25th Anniversary Version is the true theatrical release with crisp picture and outstanding sound. If you are a fan, you'll love this release. The Last Starfighter (25th Anniversary Edition) [Blu-ray]
The Last Starfighter...of the 80's September 8, 2010 Robert G. Callison (MANASSAS, VA, US) It was surprising to see the difference between the technologies of the 80's versus current day. What was considered to be great graphics back then would be laughed off the screen today. This is even more apparent in the Blu-ray version where the graphics look very much pasted onto the screen with no real interaction between what was in the background and the graphics itself. Things that "exploded" like the alien base, merely disappeared when the scene returns to it later in the movie.
Saying that, it was nice to revisit and get a taste of the 80's again, however I wouldn't recommend getting this in Blu-ray as the graphics contrast is too great. The DVD would be sufficient to enjoy the movie for what it was, a good family movie with a little humor (especially the fashions and hairstyles of the 80's) as well as an old fashioned story plot where a teenager, coming of age realizes that he doesn't have to be stuck in his current situation, he can always break free and save the world(s).
"Starfighter" is sweet science fiction September 7, 2010 Dr. Robert F. Knoll (Highland Park, NJ) Viewing "Starfighter", clearly and vividly presented in Blu-ray, is like returning to the days of technological yesteryear. With gaming imagery and visual special effects reminiscent of Pac-man and the first "Star Wars", the story features a fresh-faced and beguiling main character, Alex, played by the big-haired but charming Lance Guest and 2 extrastellar characters inhabited by veteran character actors Dan O'Herlihy as Alex's reptilian sidekick and Robert Preston as an intergalactic hustler(The Music Man in outerspace).
Set at the intersection of fantasy and reality, "Starfighter" could very well have veered into the pretentious, pondering existential questions such as "Who am I?" "What am I doing here?" "What are my responsibilities to myself and others?" Instead, it functions as a refreshingly uncynical boy's adventure film and a worthy modestly budgeted companion to the high profile "E.T." "Back to the Future" and "Big", with which it shares many characteristics.
great family movie August 31, 2010 Leyann Hart The Last Starfighter was one of my boys' favorites when they were growing up. It's great for the whole family -
a classic!
Great 80's Movie! August 23, 2010 F.J. Hansen (Fremont, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
One of the great films of the 1980's, in my opinion! I only discovered this film about 5 years ago, but it quickly became one of my favorites. I really love the CGI. It may not look like much compared to the visual effects we see today, but really ground-breaking at the time. The people in charge did a fine job venturing into the frontiers of computer graphics. Fine job by the rest of the cast and crew, too. Love Craig Safan's music!
As for the story... It may seem silly to some--a teenager recruited through a video game to fight in an interstellar war--but it does send some really good messages. Like not underestimating one's own worth, and to seize the opportunity when it presents itself to reach one's goals.
