Chicken soup machine repairman and intergalactic loser Dave Lister awakes from suspended animation to discover he is the lone survivor of a radiation leak and is now three million years into deep space and the last surviving member of the human race. Dave is soon joined by a hologram of his dead bunkmate, a life-form who’s evolved from his pet cat, and a neurotic sanitation mechanoid. Together this unlikely bunch of heroes attempt to find their way back to Earth, under the guidance of Holly, the ship’s senile computer, encountering a whole heap of smeg on the way.

Red Dwarf Rocks...!!.. September 6, 2010 Durr D. Dawg (Clearfield, Utah, USA) Although I haven't received my order as yet, that doesn't mean I haven't seen all the red dwarf series.. So, I finally got tired of having to wait a week to see one thirty minute episode and decided to buy'um all.. and was I delighted for the price the big A offered them for.. I know I'll have no gripes when they arrive because I'm assured cooperation from my favorite supplier. Buying them here saved me well over 50% off other stores and the s/h? Perfect for my budget. Thanks big A for being there when I need you.
WARNING: DO NOT BUY THIS BOXED SET! July 23, 2010 Robert E. Finley (Palm Springs, CA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Now, that I have your complete attention...
Do not get me wrong. I LOVE RED DWARF! It's one of the most delightfully wierd and funny series the BBC ever made.
This review is to warn all Red Dwarf fans that Series 6 of this boxed set has a serious defect. The first 3 episodes work and look great. However, when you go to episodes 4, 5, and 6, all 3 episodes play back with severe pixalation, and in fact, aren't EVEN RED DWARF EPISODES! They are of some unknown BBC DRAMA. How such a severe fault in a DVD disc from the BBC could escape pre release inspection, and into such a large print run is beyond my coprehension.
So, good Red Dwarf fans, DO NOT BUY THIS BOXED SET, AND IF YOU DO, IMMEDATELY CHECK THE SERIES 6 DISC FOR DEFECTS!
And an additional SHAME ON YOU to Amazon, Warner Brothers, and the BBC for not catching this serious defect in this set's pre release stages.
If you love Red Dwarf as I do, buy the 8 seasons as individual DVD's, and avoid this paticular nasty grief.
Great series but check the discs when you get them June 21, 2010 T. ROBERTSON (San Diego, CA United States) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is an excellent collection of discs for anyone that enjoyed the Red Dwarf series. There are many excellent reviews so I won't bother duplicating them. Suffice it to say the shows and the extras included with each series were true to the originals and well worth the cost.
The downside, and reason I knocked off two stars (in hopes others would see this warning), is there was a bad disc. I'm pretty sure it was Series 6, the same series others have reported problems with. I was lucky to run through all the shows when they arrived so found it in time to return the collection for a replacement (which worked fine).
The problem wasn't a damaged disc from shipment or poor packaging as there was no visible damage. It was more likely a manufacturing or bulk storage (prior to packaging) issue as the surface had an uneven sheen to it that wouldn't buff out. I've seen similar damage before on other CD/DVDs and am glad Amazon has such a good return policy.
Fantastic! June 17, 2010 Jason Hess (Hampton Roads, VA) I was introduced to Red Dwarf in the 90s on MPT. I have always loved this show, so glad they released the entire collection minus the 2009 specials (which you can get separately). Red Dwarf is one of those shows that perfectly blends sci-fi & comedy. Each season has excellent extras from deleted scenes, easter eggs, and even the lost episode. Some of the episodes you have the choice of watching broadcast, extended, remastered, or extended & remastered. So sit back board the Dwarf or Starbug and enjoy the show.
Oh and by the way remember to look for the TARDIS from Doctor Who in season 2.
Ship Of Fools. (With Apologise To Hieronymus.) May 24, 2010 Armchair Pundit (Durham City, England.) When I first saw how many reviews had already been written about this show I thought there wasn't much point in going into much more detail about the show, as earlier reviews do that in so much detail.
However I will persevere.
So welcome aboard the Jupiter Mining Corporation's "Red Dwarf" as it tries to get back to Earth from three million years in the future.
If you like absurd but imaginative comedy with three dimensional characters you actually care about, then this show is it. Another part of the fun of watching is trying to guess which sci-fi movie is being parodied. Alien and Terminator fans will see what I mean.
A big influence on Red Dwarf was John Carpenters 1974 movie "Dark Star". (Check that movie out too! it's good.)
The fact this show was even made is something of a minor miracle, as it had been rejected by B.B.C. London for three years, but the writers Rob Grant and Doug Naylor were very persistant, it was eventually made by B.B.C. Manchester.
Because of the very low budget, the first two series are mainly character conflict's between Lister and Rimmer but do not dismiss them for the more glossy later series, as there is much to enjoy in the character interplay.
The budget increase from series three onwards meant more, on location and model shots, and as such looks more glossy with special effect's.
As for the crew, it is made up of some of the most unheroic workshy and quite frankly unhygienic people in the "future history" of mankind.
These individuals would be kicked out of the "United Federation of Planet's Academy" on their first day.
~~~~
The crew members are:-
Dave Lister, putting it simply. Lister is a grade one slob, with a heart of gold. (For everyone but Rimmer.)
Arnold Judas Rimmer, is quite frankly so obnoxious it's surprising he wasn't thrown out of an airlock long ago.
(He's also a hologram of Lister's long dead crewmate.)
Cat, a lifeform that evolved from Lister's cat.
Holly, the ships computer.
After series two comes Kryten. An obsequious android butler. (I serve therefore I am.)
From series seven, Lister's ex girlfriend Christine Kochanski returns, although the actress is different from the earlier seasons.
I've downloaded a couple of stills from the show too!
I've knocked off a star for series seven and eight, which I felt lacked the sharp edged humour of the earlier seasons. Although, "Tikka to ride" and "Stoke me a clipper" are both funny and imaginative. I've not seen "Back to Earth" yet but from what I've heard I've not missed much.
Some of the episodes were so imaginative that a few years later Star Trek the Next Generation ripped off some stories!
There aren't that many sci-fi comedies out there, give it a try, it does seem popular.
